Your Daily Devotional 8/22/2025: Stop Doubting, Start Believing

Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’

John 20:27

Devotional Message

Even when we struggle to believe, Jesus always meets us exactly where we are in our doubts. Just as He did with Thomas, He provides personal attention through a gentle command and an invitation—offering the very evidence we think we need while calling us to ‘stop doubting and believe.’ Like Thomas who demanded to see Jesus’ hands and touch His side, Jesus doesn’t condemn our need for proof but compassionately provides it, saying ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side.’ This balance between providing evidence and calling for faith reveals both His resurrected body and His deep compassion for all doubters.

Each time we falter with our faith, we seek proof, validation, or a sign to give ourselves permission to keep walking forward. This desire to receive confirmation is warranted, as we want to ensure that the path we’re treading is part of God’s will for us. Yet, oftentimes, we wait and wait and wait for tangible proof, rather than exercising deep faith that where we are is exactly where God wants us to be. Like Thomas, we set conditions for our belief—’Unless I see… unless I touch… I will not believe.’ This leads us to halt our lives, feel stuck, overanalyze, and ultimately doubt ourselves, God, and the path we’re walking. Whether it’s related to career growth, personal relationships, or following our dreams, doubt becomes the voice that hinders us from moving forward.

Yet, the moment we ignore the voice of doubt and instead choose to believe that Jesus is right next to us—even when we can’t physically see Him—we receive His compassion and patience. Just as Jesus told Thomas, ‘Stop doubting and believe,’ He speaks the same words to us in our moments of uncertainty. Right when we need it the most, He provides exactly what we need to move from doubt to faith, meeting our specific struggles with personal attention.

There is beauty in this truth—that Jesus always offers individual care for each of our unique doubts, just as He did for Thomas. But the greater blessing comes when we move beyond needing physical proof to trusting in Jesus’s character and promises. We come to realize that the greatest evidence isn’t what we can touch or see, but our capacity to believe in the One who conquered death and lives today.

Let’s Pray

Dear God, thank you for Jesus’ patience when I struggle to believe and instead give more weight to my doubts and questions. Knowing who He is and how He conquered death, help me move from doubt to belief in specific areas of my personal struggles. I trust that He will meet me exactly where I am in my doubt, just as He did with Thomas. Let me move beyond needing constant signs, confirmations, or evidence to trusting in Jesus’s character and promises. I trust that even when I can’t see everything clearly, Jesus will always address my spiritual struggles with the same gentle compassion He showed Thomas. Help me hear His voice saying to me, ‘Stop doubting and believe,’ and give me the courage to respond with faith rather than fear. Thank You that Jesus meets each of my doubts with personal attention and love. Amen.
