For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21
Devotional Message
What we invest in shapes who we are and who we become. This verse reveals a powerful truth about how our hearts form—they follow our investments. “Where your treasure is” encompasses whatever receives our time, attention, energy, and focus. It’s what we think about when our minds wander, what we prioritize when we make choices, what we sacrifice for and orient our lives toward, what we expend most of our energy on. And Jesus tells us that wherever we place these investments, our hearts will inevitably follow.
This works both ways. When we consistently invest time in prayer, Scripture, and cultivating relationship with God, our hearts naturally grow more attached to Him. When we invest in serving others, our hearts expand with compassion, we walk on this earth with a deep sense of peace, gratitude and faith. But the reverse is true—when we invest most of our energy in accumulating wealth, our hearts become anxious about material possessions. When we invest attention in social media validation, our hearts become dependent on external approval. When we invest in the wrong relationship, our hearts get tainted by the toxicity we allow.
The challenging part is that we often don’t realize what we’re truly treasuring until we examine where our investments actually go. We might say God is our greatest treasure, but our calendars reveal we rarely make time for Him. We might claim people matter most, but our attention stays glued to screens. We might assert that we spend ample time for self-care, yet give access to ourselves to those who don’t deserve it. Our stated values and actual investments don’t always match, and this misalignment creates inner conflict-preventing us from living in our truth.
What makes this verse so important is that it gives us a diagnostic tool for our spiritual health. When we feel distant from God, ourselves or the things we want to do, we can look at where we’ve been investing our treasure. Our hearts follow our investments—not the other way around. By intentionally redirecting our time, attention, energy, and resources toward what truly matters, we can gradually reorient our hearts toward God, His kingdom and His will.
Let’s Pray
Dear God, help me examine where my treasure truly is through my daily choices and habits. When my heart drifts toward temporary things, redirect my attention to what lasts eternally. Give me courage to realign my investments with my values. May my calendar, my thoughts, and my choices all reflect that You are my greatest treasure. Amen.
