Your Daily Devotional 2/15/2026: God Gave You Power, Love, and a Sound Mind

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline

2 Timothy 1:7

Devotional Message

Paul reminds Timothy—and you—of what the Spirit actually gives: “The Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” Timidity shrinks back from what God calls you toward, fear paralyzes when you should act, cowardice keeps you small when you’re meant to expand. But the Spirit dwelling in you doesn’t produce this shrinking—He generates the opposite. Power to do what seems impossible, love that overflows toward difficult people, self-discipline (literally “sound mind”) that thinks clearly when chaos swirls around you.

“Gives us power, love and self-discipline” names three gifts that counter timidity’s effects. Power addresses your sense of inadequacy—you have divine strength for what you’re facing, capacity beyond your natural abilities, energy that doesn’t come from your depleted reserves. Love addresses your tendency toward self-protection—you can extend compassion even when it costs you, can remain openhearted when fear wants you to close off. Self-discipline (sound mind) addresses the mental chaos that feeds timidity—you can think clearly, make decisions wisely, maintain perspective when everything feels overwhelming.

The contemplative truth here is that timidity isn’t from God—it’s learned response to threat, protective mechanism developed through wounds, shrinking that happens when you forget who dwells in you. But the Spirit gives something different: power, love, sound mind. When you feel timid about speaking truth, remember: the Spirit gives you power. When fear makes you want to withdraw from difficult people, remember: the Spirit gives you love. When anxiety scrambles your thinking, remember: the Spirit gives you sound mind. You’re not generating these qualities through willpower—you’re receiving them from the Spirit already dwelling in you.

Let’s Pray

Holy Spirit, thank You for giving me power, love, and a sound mind—not timidity. When I shrink back in fear, remind me that You’ve given me strength for what I’m facing. When self-protection tempts me to close off, fill me with love that overflows. When anxiety scrambles my thinking, restore the sound mind You’ve placed in me. I receive what You give. Amen.
