The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
1 John 3:24
Devotional Message
John addresses a question everyone asks eventually: how do I know God actually lives in me? “The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them” establishes mutual indwelling—you live in God and God lives in you, not as separate realities but as simultaneous truth. But “keeping God’s commands” isn’t about perfect performance or flawless obedience. It’s about living in alignment with divine nature rather than constantly resisting it, choosing love over hate, truth over lies, generosity over greed as your basic orientation.
“And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us” provides the answer. You don’t know God lives in you through intellectual certainty or by checking off religious requirements. You know it by the Spirit—the presence you can’t fully explain, the promptings that redirect you, the conviction that surfaces when you’re off track, the peace that arrives when you align with truth. The Spirit is both the gift and the evidence of the gift, both God’s presence in you and your awareness of God’s presence.
The contemplative invitation is to pay attention to the Spirit as evidence of God’s indwelling. When you sense prompting toward compassion you wouldn’t naturally feel, that’s the Spirit testifying that God lives in you. When conviction surfaces about behavior you’re justifying, that’s evidence of divine presence. When peace settles in your depths despite external chaos, that’s the Spirit witnessing to reality you can’t see. You know God lives in you not because you’ve achieved spiritual perfection but because the Spirit He gave you is active, present, making Himself known in ways that transcend explanation.
Let’s Pray
God, teach me to recognize the Spirit You gave me as evidence that You live in me. When I doubt whether You’re really present, help me pay attention to the promptings, conviction, and peace that can’t be explained by anything else. I don’t need perfect performance to know You dwell in me—I need awareness of the Spirit’s activity. Open my eyes to Your presence. Amen.
