In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.
Philippians 2:5
Devotional Message
Paul issues surprisingly direct command: “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” Not “try to think somewhat like Jesus” or “approximate His perspective when convenient” but actually have the same mindset—the identical thought patterns, values, and orientations that governed how Christ related to people. This isn’t about perfect theological understanding but about adopting Christ’s approach to relationships: humility instead of status-seeking, service instead of self-promotion, sacrifice instead of self-protection.
The verses that follow describe Christ’s mindset: though He was God, He didn’t cling to divine privileges but emptied Himself, took servant form, humbled Himself to death on a cross. That’s the mindset you’re called to adopt in your relationships—not grasping for status or insisting on your rights, not demanding that others serve you or expecting recognition for what you do. Christ’s mindset moves downward in humility while human instinct claws upward toward status. His mindset gives while ours takes, serves while ours demands service, empties while ours accumulates.
The contemplative work is noticing when you’re operating from self-serving mindset rather than Christ’s mindset. When you’re keeping score in relationships, comparing who gives more or serves more, demanding fairness—that’s not Christ’s mindset. When you’re positioning yourself for recognition, protecting your reputation, insisting on your rights—that’s human instinct, not divine nature. Having Christ’s mindset means making radical choice to think like He thought: others before self, service before status, humility before honor. This goes against every natural inclination, which is exactly why you need His mindset rather than relying on your own.
Let’s Pray
Jesus, give me Your mindset in my relationships—thinking like You thought, valuing what You valued, approaching people as You approached them. When I’m tempted toward status-seeking, self-promotion, or self-protection, redirect me to humility, service, and sacrifice. Help me notice when I’m operating from self-serving instinct rather than Christ-like thinking. Transform my mind to think like Yours. Amen.
