There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
1 John 4:18
Devotional Message
John reveals the relationship between love and fear: “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.” These two cannot coexist in the same space—where perfect love enters, fear must leave. Not that love makes you ignore danger or act recklessly, but that love dissolves the anxiety-driven fear that paralyzes and controls. “Perfect love” is God’s love for you, complete and without conditions, the love that chose you before you did anything to deserve it and continues regardless of what you do to disqualify yourself.
“Because fear has to do with punishment” explains why love drives out fear. If you’re afraid God will punish you, if you’re anxious about disappointing Him, if you’re worried He’ll reject you when you fail—you haven’t fully grasped how completely He loves you. Fear whispers that punishment is coming, that you’re not measuring up, that love is conditional on performance. But perfect love says you’re already accepted, already chosen, already held secure regardless of your failures. When you believe you’re loved perfectly, fear of punishment loses its power.
“The one who fears is not made perfect in love” doesn’t mean you’re failing if you experience fear—it means fear reveals places where you haven’t yet fully received the perfect love being offered. The contemplative invitation is to notice your fears and recognize them as opportunities to receive more of God’s perfect love. When you’re afraid of disappointing God, that’s invitation to receive love that isn’t disappointed. When you’re anxious about punishment, that’s opportunity to embrace love that already absorbed all punishment at the cross. Perfect love drives out fear—not through trying harder to be fearless but through receiving more deeply the love that casts fear out.
Let’s Pray
God, let Your perfect love drive out my fear. When I’m anxious about disappointing You or afraid of punishment, remind me that I’m already accepted and all punishment was absorbed at the cross. Help me recognize fear as opportunity to receive more deeply the love You’re offering. Make me perfect in love so fear loses its grip on me. Amen.
