The Way You Treat Your Body Matters To God, Here’s Why

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Our physical bodies are sacred dwelling places for God’s Holy Spirit, and there is profound dignity and honor that comes from being God’s temple. His Spirit lives within each of us, making us mobile sanctuaries, alive with divine purpose. Yet most of us live with a sense of separation—we resent our vessels, treat our bodies poorly, or punish them through neglect, over-exertion or lack of rest. When we grasp the truth that our bodies have eternal significance because they house God’s presence, our entire perception transforms.

Each day, we have the sacred responsibility to honor God with our bodies—through nourishing them with wholesome foods, using them to serve others, purifying them to create space for His Spirit, channeling their energy to create in ways that transform the world around us, making lifestyle choices that draw us closer to God. These choices impact not only our own vessel, but also our relationships with others and our intimacy with God Himself.

While we often focus on the temporal nature of our bodies—fixating on external appearance, beauty we have or feel we lack—God sees them with eternal significance. What we accomplish during our time on earth in these bodies is what captures God’s attention.

There’s a profound connection between physical stewardship and spiritual worship, and understanding our true identity transforms how we approach self-care, rest and boundaries. If the Creator of the universe is dwelling within us, the question becomes: How can I nourish His presence within me each day? How can I treat this sacred sanctuary with the reverence it deserves?
