A Prayer For The Humility To Be Led Where You Did Not Plan To Go

Most of us come to God with a general idea of the direction we believe our lives should take. We have plans we have quietly built up over time — hopes that have shaped the decisions we’ve made, the paths we’ve chosen, the doors we’ve walked through. And then there are the moments when God begins to lead us somewhere entirely different. Somewhere that does not match the picture we had assembled. Humility is often described as a virtue, but in practice it is one of the hardest things God asks of us — because it requires releasing not just our preferences, but our sense of what we deserve, what we’ve earned, and what we are certain we know. If you are standing at a crossroads between the life you planned and the one God seems to be preparing, this prayer is for you.

God,

There are places I thought I would be by now, and paths I was certain my life would take. I built plans around them. I trusted them. I imagined my future through them.

But where I stand today looks different than what I expected. And if I’m honest, part of me is still trying to hold onto what I thought should have been — still measuring this season against the one I had in mind.

So today I’m asking for humility. The kind that allows me to be led, even when the direction feels unfamiliar. Even when it doesn’t match the version of my life I had already made peace with. Help me trust that your plans are not a deviation from my life, but the deeper unfolding of it. That where you are guiding me is not lesser — it is just different, and perhaps more aligned than I can see right now.

God, reshape my expectations with your wisdom. Quiet the part of me that keeps looking back, and strengthen the part of me that is willing to move ahead with you. If this is the path you are leading me on, help me walk it fully — not reluctantly, but with trust.

Amen.
