A Prayer For When You Miss Someone You Know Isn’t Right For You

Real love, even when it ends, leaves an absence behind. It does not matter that you know in your mind that this person was not meant to be part of your story going forward. The heart does not process loss through logic. It processes it through time, through honesty, through the slow and often painful work of learning to hold both truths at once — that something genuinely mattered to you, and that letting it go was still the right thing to do. If you are sitting with that kind of grief today, you are not weak for feeling it.

God,

There are moments when I still miss them — not because I’ve forgotten what was wrong, but because I remember what felt good. The familiarity, the closeness, the version of us I hoped could have been real.

And sometimes that feeling feels louder than the truth.

You know why I had to let go. You saw what I tried to make work, what I overlooked, what I kept hoping would change. You know the ways it wasn’t right for me, even when I wanted it to be.

So when my heart starts to wander back, remind me why you led me away. When I begin to romanticize what was, ground me in what is true. Help me remember that missing someone doesn’t mean they were meant for me — it just means I cared.

Give me the strength not to return to what you already freed me from. Protect me from reopening doors you closed with purpose, and replace the urge to go back with the peace of moving forward.

Amen.
