A Prayer To Forgive Yourself For What You Didn’t Know Then

You are not meant to live your life looking backward with judgment. You are meant to move forward with wisdom.

And the person you are today — the one who sees more clearly, who chooses more carefully, who understands more deeply, she exists because of what you walked through, not in spite of it.

God is not asking you to stay stuck in who you were. He is asking you to trust who you are becoming

God,

There are moments I look back on and wish I had chosen differently — spoken differently, seen things more clearly, walked away sooner, or stayed when it mattered.

It’s hard not to hold those versions of myself to the standard of who I am now. But you knew who I was in those moments. You saw what I understood, what I didn’t, what I was carrying, and what I was still learning. Nothing about my past caught you off guard. You still loved me.

So today I am asking for the grace to forgive myself. Not by excusing what I regret, but by understanding that I was moving with the awareness I had at the time.

Release me from the weight of expecting my past self to have the wisdom I only gained through experience. Help me stop revisiting those moments with judgment instead of compassion. God, teach me how to look back without condemning myself. To honor the growth without resenting where it came from.

And as I move forward, remind me that I am not defined by who I was — I am being shaped by what you are still doing in me.

Amen.
