Your Daily Devotional 1/11/2026: Nothing Is A Loss When Knowing Christ

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

Devotional Message

Paul declares the most radical reorientation possible: everything he once counted as gain—his impressive credentials, his religious pedigree, his achievements—he now considers loss for the sake of Christ. “Whatever were gains to me I now consider loss” isn’t minor adjustment but complete reversal, the recognition that what he thought made him valuable actually kept him from what truly matters. His Jewish lineage, his Pharisaic training, his zealous righteousness—all impressive by worldly standards, all ultimately worthless compared to knowing Christ.

“I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” takes the declaration even further. Not just religious credentials but everything—every achievement, every identity marker, every source of pride or security. Paul uses economic language: surpassing worth, as if he’s calculated the value and discovered that knowing Christ infinitely outweighs everything else combined. This isn’t theoretical theology but lived reality—he actually traded everything for relationship with Jesus and found the exchange more than worth it.

The contemplative invitation is to examine what you’re counting as gain. What credentials are you clinging to, what achievements are you using to establish worth, what identity markers are you depending on for security? These things aren’t necessarily bad, but when they compete with knowing Christ—when they become the source of your value rather than byproducts of your belovedness—they’ve become loss disguised as gain. The path leads you to recognize that knowing Christ surpasses everything else, that intimate relationship with Him holds more worth than all your accumulated achievements, credentials, and identities combined.

Let’s Pray

Christ, help me see what I’m counting as gain that’s actually keeping me from You. Give me courage to consider everything loss for the surpassing worth of knowing You. When I’m tempted to establish worth through achievements or credentials, redirect my heart to the only thing that truly matters—intimate relationship with You. Amen.
