Your Daily Devotional 1/14/2026: When Your Soul Is Troubled

Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!

John 12:27–28

Devotional Message

Jesus speaks with raw honesty: “Now my soul is troubled.” Not calm acceptance or spiritual bypass but genuine disturbance, the soul’s agitation when facing what will cost everything. He doesn’t pretend to be unaffected or spiritualize His dread—He names the trouble directly, acknowledging the turmoil beneath His surrender. Then comes the question that reveals His internal wrestling: “What shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’?”

You can hear the temptation in that question—the part of Him that wants rescue, that considers asking for another way, that recoils from what’s ahead. Yet immediately He answers His own question: “No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.” This is the moment of recognition that His entire existence has been moving toward this—that avoiding the cross would mean abandoning His purpose, that asking for rescue would undo everything He came to accomplish.

“Father, glorify your name!” shifts from potential escape to purposeful surrender. Rather than asking for salvation from the hour, Jesus asks that the Father be glorified through it. This is the soul’s highest prayer: not “save me from difficulty” but “be glorified through difficulty,” not “remove this cup” but “use this cup to reveal Your nature.” When you’re soul-troubled and facing what you desperately want to avoid, this is the prayer that transforms suffering into worship—asking that God be glorified through what you must endure rather than asking to be rescued from it.

Let’s Pray

Father, when my soul is troubled and I’m tempted to ask for rescue from what I’m facing, help me remember that some difficulties exist for the very purpose of glorifying You. Give me courage to pray “glorify Your name” rather than just “save me from this hour.” Use what troubles my soul to reveal Your glory. Amen.
