My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.”
John 17:20–21
Devotional Message
Jesus prays not just for His immediate disciples but for you—for everyone who will believe through their message across centuries and continents. “I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message” means you’re included in Christ’s prayer, held in His intercession before the Father. This isn’t peripheral concern but central petition: “that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.” The unity Jesus prays for isn’t organizational conformity or theological uniformity but a union that mirrors the relationship between Father and Son.
“Just as you are in me and I am in you” reveals the depth of unity Jesus desires for His followers. Not mere cooperation or tolerance but the kind of intimate indwelling that exists within the Trinity—each person different yet completely one, separate identities yet a unified essence. This unity isn’t something you create through effort but something you enter into through Christ, discovering that His presence in you connects you to everyone else in whom He dwells.
The purpose of this unity extends beyond the church itself: “May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” Your unity with other believers becomes witness to divine reality, visible evidence of Jesus’s legitimacy. When the world sees believers loving across differences, honoring despite disagreements, unified despite diversity—they encounter proof that God’s love is real and transformative. Conversely, division among people obscures this witness, suggesting that Jesus’s power is insufficient to overcome human divisions. The contemplative invitation is to recognize that your connection to other believers isn’t merely social but spiritual, rooted in shared indwelling of Christ who makes you one.
Let’s Pray
Father, thank You that Jesus prayed for my unity with all believers. Help me live from the reality that Christ in me connects me to everyone else in whom He dwells. When division tempts me, remind me that our unity reveals Your love to the world. Make us one as You and Jesus are one. Amen.
