We know that ‘We all possess knowledge.’ But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God
1 Corinthians 8:1–3
Devotional Message
Paul addresses the danger of knowledge divorced from love: “Knowledge puffs up while love builds up.” Knowledge alone inflates the ego, creating the illusion of superiority and the temptation to use what you know as weapon rather than gift. It puffs you up with pride about how much you understand, how theologically sound you are, how spiritually advanced you’ve become. But this inflation is hollow—all air, no substance, appearance without reality.
“Love builds up” operates from entirely different logic. Where knowledge puffs, love constructs. Where knowledge creates division through superior understanding, love creates connection through humble service. Love takes what it knows and uses it to strengthen others rather than elevate self. This doesn’t mean knowledge is bad—Paul himself possessed tremendous theological understanding—but knowledge must be submitted to love’s purposes or it becomes destructive.
“Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know” is humbling reminder that certainty often reveals ignorance. The more you think you’ve mastered, the less you actually understand. True knowledge produces humility because it reveals how much remains unknown. “But whoever loves God is known by God” shifts focus from your knowledge of God to God’s knowledge of you. What matters isn’t how much you know but whether you love, not the theological precision you’ve achieved but the reality of your relationship with the One who knows you completely.
The contemplative path leads you to hold knowledge loosely and love tightly. To recognize that being right about doctrine matters less than being loving in action, that theological correctness without compassionate practice is empty noise. When knowledge tempts you toward pride or judgment, love redirects you toward service and connection.
Let’s Pray
God, save me from knowledge that puffs up without love that builds up. When I’m tempted to use what I know as weapon or badge of superiority, redirect me toward humble service. Help me hold theology loosely and love tightly. May I be more concerned with loving You and others than with being right. Amen.
