For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.
Matthew 25:34–36
Devotional Message
Jesus reveals one of the most radical truths in Scripture: He is present in those who are suffering, waiting to be encountered in the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, imprisoned. “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” isn’t metaphor—Jesus actually identifies Himself with those in need, so completely that serving them becomes serving God. When you feed the hungry, you’re feeding Jesus. When you welcome the stranger, you’re welcoming Christ Himself into your home.
This identification goes beyond “Jesus cares about the poor” to “Jesus is present in the poor.” The suffering aren’t merely objects of Christ’s compassion but locations of His presence. “I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in” means that every encounter with someone in need is potential encounter with Christ Himself, every act of compassion is direct service to the One you claim to follow.
The list continues: “I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Notice these aren’t spectacular spiritual acts but ordinary human responses to tangible needs—food, water, clothing, shelter, care, presence. Christ is encountered not primarily in religious experiences but in serving those society often overlooks. The contemplative invitation is to begin seeing differently—recognizing that the homeless person on the corner, the immigrant seeking refuge, the prisoner forgotten by society might be Christ in disguise, waiting to see if you’ll recognize Him.
Let’s Pray
Jesus, open my eyes to see You in those who are hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, imprisoned. When I encounter someone in need, help me recognize it as encounter with You. Give me courage to serve the suffering, knowing that in serving them, I’m serving You directly. Make me attentive to Your hidden presence. Amen.
