You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
Psalm 51:16–17
Devotional Message
David discovers that God wants something entirely different from religious performance: “You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.” This isn’t rejection of ritual but revelation of what God truly desires beneath the ritual. If sacrifices were what God wanted, David would bring them gladly—he has resources, power, access to whatever religious offerings might satisfy divine requirements. But God’s desire goes deeper than what David can perform externally.
“My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart” reveals what actually moves divine heart. Not impressive offerings or flawless religious execution but honest brokenness, the humility to come before God without pretense or self-justification. A broken spirit admits it cannot fix itself. A contrite heart acknowledges its need for mercy rather than claiming it deserves favor. This is the sacrifice God seeks—not your strength but your weakness, not your achievements but your surrender, not your religious performance but your honest admission that you’re undone.
“You, God, will not despise” is the promise that transforms everything. When you come broken and contrite, fearing rejection or condemnation, God promises He will not despise what you bring. Your brokenness doesn’t disgust Him or disqualify you—it actually positions you to receive what He’s been wanting to give all along: love. The world despises weakness, but God draws near to it. The contemplative invitation is to stop bringing God your impressive offerings and instead bring your honest brokenness, trusting that a contrite heart is the sacrifice He’s been seeking.
Let’s Pray
God, I come to You with broken spirit and contrite heart—not impressive offerings or religious performance. Thank You for not despising my brokenness but drawing near to it. Help me stop trying to earn Your favor through what I do and instead offer You honest admission of my need. Accept this sacrifice of humility. Amen.
