I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.
Galatians 2:20
Devotional Message
Paul declares the most radical identity shift possible: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” This isn’t metaphor but mystical reality—the old self dominated by ego, fear, and self-protection has been executed alongside Christ on the cross. What remains isn’t improved version of your former self but entirely new life animated by Christ’s presence within you. The “I” that insisted on its own way, that operated from scarcity and control, that measured worth through achievement—that “I” is dead.
“But Christ lives in me” reveals what replaces the crucified self. You’re not left empty after ego dies but filled with divine presence, Christ Himself taking up residence in the space ego once occupied. This indwelling isn’t occasional visitation but permanent habitation—Christ living His life through you, His desires becoming your desires, His love flowing through your actions, His peace anchoring your chaos.
“The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” grounds this mystical truth in daily existence. You still live in physical body, still navigate ordinary circumstances, still face practical challenges. But the source of your life has fundamentally shifted—you’re no longer generating from ego’s depleted resources but living by faith in the One who dwells within you. The motivation isn’t obligation but gratitude—Christ loved you and gave Himself for you, and now He lives in you. The contemplative path leads you to stop living from the crucified “I” and start living from Christ who’s made His home in you.
Let’s Pray
Christ, help me live from the reality that I’ve been crucified with You and no longer live by my old self. Teach me that You live in me—not visiting occasionally but dwelling permanently. When I’m tempted to operate from ego, control, or fear, remind me that old self is dead. May I live by faith in You who loved me and gave Yourself for me. Amen.
