Your Daily Devotional 1/4/2026: Examining Whether Christ Lives in You

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?

2 Corinthians 13:5

Devotional Message

Paul issues a radical invitation to honest self-examination: “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.” This isn’t paranoid anxiety but contemplative inquiry into lived reality. Are you actually living from faith or merely maintaining religious appearance? Is Christ’s presence shaping your daily existence or have you reduced relationship to intellectual agreement with doctrine?

“Test yourselves” suggests active investigation rather than passive assumption. The soul must look honestly at its patterns, choices, reactions, relationships—not to generate shame but to discern truth. When pressure comes, how do you respond? When conflict arises, how do you act? When no one’s watching, who are you? These tests reveal whether faith is theoretical concept or transforming reality.

“Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you” pivots from examination to revelation. Paul’s question suggests many believers live unaware of the staggering reality dwelling within them—that Christ Himself, not merely His teachings or example but His actual presence, inhabits their being through the Spirit. You’re not striving toward union with Christ; you’re awakening to union that already exists.

“Unless, of course, you fail the test” acknowledges the possibility that some claiming Jesus haven’t actually entered genuine relationship with Him. This isn’t about losing salvation through insufficient effort but about recognizing the difference between authentic faith that transforms and intellectual truths that leave you unchanged. If you truly follow Jesus, evidence will appear in your character, relationships, responses to difficulty.

The path invites you to examine yourself honestly—not with harsh judgment but with curiosity about what’s actually true. When you look at your life, do you see Jesus’s nature emerging? Do you notice love increasing, patience developing, peace deepening, hope persisting even in darkness? Or have you been maintaining religious identity while remaining fundamentally unchanged?

Let’s Pray

Jesus, help me examine myself honestly to see whether I’m living from genuine faith or merely maintaining religious appearance. When I test my patterns and responses, let me see evidence of Your presence shaping me. Open my eyes to the staggering reality that You live in me—not as concept but as transforming presence. Show me where I’ve been striving toward union that already exists. Amen.
