I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven. As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he shows us his mercy.
Psalm 123:1–2
Devotional Message
The soul knows its posture of need: “I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven.” This upward gaze acknowledges that help comes from beyond yourself, that rescue originates not from worldly sources but from God, that what you need most requires looking beyond earthly limitations to divine authority enthroned above all circumstance. The lifting of eyes is both physical and spiritual—a deliberate reorientation of attention from what’s failing you to Who sustains you.
“As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master” uses imagery of total dependence. Slaves watch their master’s hand constantly—not from fear but from complete reliance, knowing that provision, protection, and direction come only from that source. This isn’t demeaning servitude but honest recognition of your position: utterly dependent on divine mercy for what you cannot secure yourself. The repetition emphasizes the intensity of this watching—eyes fixed, attention unwavering, gaze steady.
“So our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he shows us his mercy” reveals both the practice and the promise. The practice is sustained attention—looking to God continuously, maintaining upward gaze “till” mercy comes. “Till” acknowledges the waiting, the space between crying out and receiving answer, the gap that tests whether your dependence is genuine or merely temporary desperation. Not “if” but “till”—mercy will come because that’s God’s nature, because His compassion cannot withhold itself from those who wait with eyes in complete dependence.
Let’s Pray
God, I lift my eyes to You in complete dependence. Teach me to watch with focused attention, knowing my survival depends entirely on Your mercy. When I’m tempted to look elsewhere for provision, redirect my gaze upward. Help me maintain this posture—eyes fixed on You—till You show me Your mercy. Amen.
