But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.
Luke 12:20-21
Devotional Message
True wealth is not material—it is spiritual. The richness of our human lives comes not from material possessions, money, fame, or fortune. It manifests through our relationship with God, good works, acts of service and eternal values. When we recognize that true wealth is found in God alone, our greed dissipates, our need for more than we already have dissolves, and our motivations evolve from pursuing material possessions to seeking spiritual security. Yet when we make material wealth our primary focus, we lose sight of what true security actually is.
To be “rich toward God” means we use our time, resources and talents not for financial gain or prosperity, but as means to spread more love and serve others. When we make that our primary motivation, we realize that every breathing moment is an opportunity to expand our spiritual wealth. The reality is that life is uncertain—the future is a mystery, and all we have is the present moment. Recognizing this truth shifts our priorities from earthly matters to eternal ones—we learn to balance wise planning with deep trust in God’s provision. From this state, relationships and career goals no longer become means to selfish ends, but rather vessels to grow in generosity and purpose.
In societal norms, success and security are found in money, status or fame. Yet in God’s kingdom, success is simply honoring God in each moment and growing that relationship with Him. When we invest in spiritual wealth—love, service, relationships, and faith—we build treasure that death cannot touch. This is the only wealth that truly lasts.
Let’s Pray
Dear God, pour wisdom into my heart today to prioritize spiritual wealth over material accumulation. Teach me how to be generous with my time, talents and resources, without attaching myself to any outcome or needing anything in return. I know that my time here is limited, so I want to invest in what matters eternally and to build something that can live on.
Protect me from the deception that material security equals true security, and help me focus my energy on being a faithful steward. I want to live with open hands, trusting your provision, and I want to grow in understanding what it means to be rich toward you. I trust that as I invest in the eternal rather than the temporal, I will experience deep peace knowing that I am a vessel for your love. Amen.
