Your Daily Devotional 12/17/2025: The Freedom of Being Loved Before You Earn It

Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

Galatians 2:16

Devotional Message

This is an invitation to put down the measuring stick, and halt any striving. This is what Paul declares with such repetitive urgency, hammering the point home three times in one verse as if he knows how deeply the performance mindset runs in the human mind. “A person is not justified by the works of the law”—not by your efforts to be good enough, spiritual enough, worthy enough. Not by the boxes you check or the rules you follow or the religious achievements you accumulate.

“But by faith in Jesus Christ” shifts the entire foundation from doing to receiving, from earning to trusting, from performance to presence. Faith here isn’t intellectual agreement with theological propositions but the soul’s capacity to rest in Love that chose you before you did anything to deserve it. This is the truth of grace: you are justified—made right, declared worthy, brought into union with God—through faith alone, not through your exhaustive efforts to prove yourself acceptable.

Paul’s repetition reveals how resistant we are to this truth. “By faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.” He says it three times because we need to hear it in order to truly believe it, as our egos desperately want to believe we can earn our belovedness through sufficient effort. But the mystical truth is this: you cannot work your way into being loved by God because you’re already loved. The work is done. Christ has already bridged the gap you keep trying to close through religious performance.

This is where true freedom begins—when you stop trying to earn what’s already been given, when you release the burden of proving yourself worthy and simply receive the gift of being already chosen, already loved, already justified by faith.

Let’s Pray

God, help me stop striving to earn what You’ve already given. Teach me that I am justified by faith in Christ, not by my endless efforts to prove myself worthy. When I’m tempted to perform for Your love, remind me that You chose me before I did anything to deserve it. Let me rest in grace. Amen.
