There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Devotional Message

Paul dismantles every division humanity uses to separate itself: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female.” These weren’t minor distinctions in Paul’s world—they were fundamental categories that determined your value, your rights, your access to God. Jews and Gentiles hated each other. Slaves and free lived in completely different realities. Male and female had vastly unequal status. Yet Paul declares that in Christ, these divisions that seem so absolute dissolve into unity that transcends social categories.

“For you are all one in Christ Jesus” reveals the basis of this unity. Not that differences disappear or don’t matter, but that something deeper than difference unites you—your shared identity in Christ. When you’re in Christ, the thing that’s truest about you isn’t your ethnicity, your social status, or your gender. It’s that you belong to Him, that His life dwells in you, that you’re united with everyone else in whom Christ lives. This oneness isn’t created through human effort at diversity or inclusion—it already exists through union with Christ.

The contemplative invitation is to recognize that the person you’re tempted to dismiss because they’re different from you shares your deepest identity if they’re in Christ. The political opponent, the person from another culture, the one whose lifestyle you don’t understand—if Christ dwells in them, you are one with them at a level deeper than all your differences. This doesn’t erase real distinctions or pretend conflicts don’t exist, but it anchors you in something more fundamental: you are all one in Christ Jesus. When division tempts you, return to this deeper unity that already exists beneath the surface.

Let’s Pray

Christ, help me see past surface differences to the deeper unity we share in You. When I’m tempted to dismiss someone because they’re different from me, remind me that we are one in You at a level deeper than all our distinctions. Teach me to honor both our differences and our unity. Break down the walls I build to separate myself from others. Amen.
