Your Daily Devotional 2/12/2026: The Spirit Confirms You Are God’s Child

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Romans 8:16

Devotional Message

Paul describes something beyond intellectual knowledge: “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” This isn’t information you learn from a book or doctrine you accept mentally—it’s direct testimony, the Spirit speaking to your spirit at a level beneath conscious thought. “Testifies with” suggests partnership, two witnesses agreeing on the same truth: you belong to God as His child. Your spirit knows this at some level, and the Spirit confirms what your spirit already senses, creating internal certainty that transcends external proof.

This testimony addresses the soul’s deepest question: do I really belong? Am I actually God’s child or just pretending? The Spirit answers not through logical arguments or biblical proofs (though those have value) but through direct witness to your spirit. It’s the inner knowing that rises when you pray, the quiet assurance that surfaces in worship, the settled conviction that emerges in silence—this isn’t self-generated confidence but the Spirit testifying to reality you couldn’t manufacture yourself.

“That we are God’s children” is the content of this testimony. Not servants working to earn favor, not subjects keeping distant from their king, but children held in intimate relationship with Father who loves them. Children don’t earn their position through performance—they possess it through birth, through being brought into the family. The Spirit testifies to this reality when you doubt it, when shame whispers you’re disqualified, when fear suggests you’re not really His. The contemplative invitation is to become quiet enough to hear the Spirit’s testimony, to pay attention to the witness rising from depths you didn’t create, to trust the Spirit’s testimony more than your self-doubt.

Let’s Pray

Holy Spirit, testify with my spirit that I am God’s child. When doubt whispers that I don’t really belong, speak louder with the truth of my identity. Help me become quiet enough to hear Your witness rising from depths I didn’t create. Teach me to trust Your testimony more than my self-doubt or shame. I am God’s child—help me believe it. Amen.
