For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6
Devotional Message
Paul connects creation to new creation: “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts.” The same God who spoke light into existence at creation has spoken light into your interior darkness. “Let light shine out of darkness” was the first creative word, bringing order from chaos, visibility from void. That same creative power now operates within you, illuminating what was dark, making visible what was hidden, bringing order to your inner chaos. This isn’t metaphor but parallel—creation’s first light and your heart’s illumination flow from the same divine source.
“Made his light shine in our hearts” reveals where this illumination happens. Not external circumstances brightening or situations improving, but light shining in your heart—the depths where you experience darkness, confusion, despair. God doesn’t wait for your darkness to clear before bringing light; He shines light into the darkness itself, transforming it from within. This light doesn’t eliminate all questions or remove all mystery, but it makes visible what was impossible to see before.
“To give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ” states the purpose of this internal illumination. You see God’s glory not in abstract concepts or religious experiences but in Christ’s face—in His compassion, His truth, His sacrifice, His resurrection. The light in your heart enables you to recognize glory displayed in Christ that you couldn’t see when darkness dominated. The contemplative invitation is to recognize that the same power that created light from nothing is at work in you right now, illuminating your heart’s darkness so you can see God’s glory in the face of Christ.
Let’s Pray
God, thank You for making Your light shine in my heart the same way You made light shine at creation. Illuminate my interior darkness so I can see Your glory displayed in Christ’s face. When confusion and despair dominate, remind me that You speak light into darkness, bringing visibility to what was hidden. Shine in me today. Amen.
