I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity.
John 17:23
Devotional Message
Jesus prays for something that seems impossible: complete unity among His followers. “I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity” reveals how this happens. Not through human effort at getting along or institutional structures that enforce conformity, but through Christ in believers and believers in Christ, creating unity that flows from shared indwelling. You in Christ connects you to the Father; Christ in you connects you to everyone else in whom Christ dwells. This isn’t unity you create but unity you discover through mutual participation in divine life.
“Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me” states the purpose of this unity. The watching world needs evidence that Christ is who He claimed to be, that God’s love is real and transformative. That evidence comes through believers loving across differences, remaining unified despite disagreements, honoring one another when division would be easier. When the world sees Christians loving people they’re “supposed” to hate, unity between those who should be enemies—they encounter proof that something supernatural is at work.
The contemplative invitation is to recognize that your unity with other believers isn’t based on agreeing about everything or even liking each other. It’s based on Christ in you connecting you to Christ in them, creating bond that transcends personality conflicts, theological differences, or political disagreements. When you’re tempted toward division, return to the deeper reality: Christ is in both of you, which means you’re connected at a level beneath your conflicts. This doesn’t mean ignoring real differences, but it does mean refusing to let differences destroy unity Christ has already established.
Let’s Pray
Jesus, bring me to complete unity with other believers through Your presence in us. Help me see that I’m connected to everyone in whom You dwell at a level beneath our conflicts. When differences tempt me toward division, remind me that You in me connects me to You in them. Let our unity testify to the world that You are who You claimed to be. Amen.
