Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature.
2 Peter 1:4
Devotional Message
Peter makes a staggering claim: “Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature.” Participate means share in, take part in, become partaker of—not observe from distance or admire from outside but actually engage in. Divine nature means God’s essential character, His attributes, His way of being. You’re invited to participate in this—not to become God (that’s the serpent’s lie) but to share in God’s nature, to take on divine characteristics, to be formed into His likeness.
“Having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires” describes what you’re leaving behind as you participate in divine nature. The world’s corruption flows from desires divorced from God—lust for what you don’t have, greed for more than you need, pride that elevates self above others. But as you participate in divine nature, these corrupting desires lose their grip. You escape not by trying harder to resist but by being transformed from within, old nature replaced by participation in divine nature that desires differently.
The contemplative truth here is that you’re not merely forgiven sinner or improved human—you’re participant in divine nature itself. God’s promises aren’t just about what He’ll do for you externally but about transformation He’s working internally, making you partaker of His own nature. When you extend grace you didn’t think you could give, when patience emerges from depths you didn’t know existed, when love flows toward people you should hate—you’re experiencing divine nature you participate in. This isn’t your natural capacity but God’s nature you’re sharing through the promises He’s given.
Let’s Pray
God, help me grasp that I participate in Your divine nature through the promises You’ve given. Teach me that transformation isn’t just behavior modification but sharing in Your essential character. When grace, patience, or love emerges that I can’t explain, remind me it’s Your nature I’m participating in. Make me a partaker of who You are. Amen.
