As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.
John 15:9
Devotional Message
Jesus reveals the staggering scope of His love for you: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.” The same love the Father has for the Son—infinite, delighted, unshakeable—is the love Christ has for you. Not lesser version or diluted copy, but the identical quality and intensity of love that exists within the Trinity now directed toward you. The Father’s love for Christ is complete, eternal, unconditional—and that’s precisely how Christ loves you. This isn’t about earning or deserving; it’s about receiving what’s been freely given.
“Now remain in my love” is both invitation and command. Remain means abide, stay, make your home—not occasional visits to Christ’s love when you feel you deserve it, but constant dwelling in love that’s already surrounding you. The challenge isn’t getting Christ to love you (He already does, with the same love the Father has for Him) but remaining in that love instead of wandering into shame, self-condemnation, or belief that you must earn what’s freely offered.
The contemplative practice is catching yourself when you’ve left Christ’s love and consciously returning to it. Notice when you’re operating from “I must earn love through performance” rather than “I remain in love already given.” Notice when shame whispers you’re unworthy rather than remembering you’re loved with the Father’s love for the Son. Remaining in Christ’s love isn’t passive—it’s active choice to stay put in what’s true rather than wandering into lies about your worth. The love is constant; your remaining is the variable. Choose to stay.
Let’s Pray
Jesus, help me grasp that You love me with the same love the Father has for You—infinite, delighted, unshakeable. Teach me to remain in Your love rather than wandering into shame or self-condemnation. When I’m tempted to earn what’s freely given, remind me to stay put in love that’s already surrounding me. I choose to remain in Your love. Amen.
