But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.
Acts 1:8
Devotional Message
Jesus promises something His disciples desperately need: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” Not power you generate through effort or achieve through spiritual discipline, but power that comes when divine presence arrives and fills what’s empty. The disciples have witnessed Christ’s ministry, heard His teachings, seen resurrection itself—yet they lack power to continue His work until the Spirit comes. This reveals a crucial truth: knowledge about God isn’t enough, proximity to Jesus’s earthly ministry wasn’t enough, even belief in resurrection wasn’t enough. They need the Spirit’s indwelling power to transform them from observers into participants.
“And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” reveals the purpose of this power. Not personal advancement or spiritual superiority but witness—your life becoming testimony to Christ’s reality, your transformed existence pointing others toward the One who transformed you. The geography expands in concentric circles: Jerusalem (immediate context), Judea (familiar territory), Samaria (uncomfortable territory where enemies live), ends of the earth (everywhere). The Spirit’s power enables you to witness wherever you are, starting with people you know and extending to places you never imagined.
The contemplative truth here is that you cannot be Christ’s witness through human capacity alone. You need the Spirit’s power—not as optional enhancement but as essential requirement for living the life Christ calls you to. When you feel inadequate for what God’s asking, when you lack strength to love difficult people or courage to speak truth or wisdom to navigate complexity—remember: you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. The power isn’t already in you waiting to be discovered; it comes when the Spirit arrives and fills you.
Let’s Pray
Holy Spirit, come on me with power I cannot generate myself. Help me recognize that knowledge about God and good intentions aren’t enough—I need Your indwelling presence to transform me from observer into participant. Make me Christ’s witness wherever I am, starting with people I know and extending to places I never imagined. Fill me with power that comes only from You. Amen.
