To be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Ephesians 4:23-24
Devotional Message
Paul describes transformation that begins internally: “To be made new in the attitude of your minds.” Not behavior modification from outside in but renewal from inside out, starting with how you think. “Attitude of your minds” suggests the fundamental orientation of your thought life—the lens through which you interpret reality, the narratives you believe about yourself and God, the assumptions that shape your responses. This renewal isn’t instantaneous but progressive, the gradual rewiring that happens as you expose yourself to truth that contradicts lies you’ve believed.
“And to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” reveals what emerges from renewed mind. The new self isn’t something you create through effort but something already created—fashioned to be like God, designed to reflect divine nature. “Put on” suggests intentional choice, daily decision to live from your new identity rather than reverting to old patterns. This new self isn’t fake persona you adopt but your truest self emerging as mind is renewed, the person God created you to be becoming visible as lies are replaced with truth.
“Created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” establishes the new self’s nature. You’re not trying to become like God through striving—you’re already created to be like Him, fashioned in His image, designed to reflect His character. True righteousness isn’t religious performance; true holiness isn’t moral perfection. Both flow naturally from being who you actually are—the new self created like God—rather than pretending to be who you’re not. The contemplative path invites you to let your mind be renewed so the new self God created can emerge without obstruction.
Let’s Pray
God, renew the attitude of my mind—the lens through which I see reality, the narratives I believe about myself and You. Help me put on the new self You’ve already created to be like You in true righteousness and holiness. When I’m tempted to revert to old patterns, remind me that I’m living from my truest self when I reflect Your nature. Amen.
