For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:3
Devotional Message
Paul declares a mystery that transforms everything: “For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” You died—not will die someday or should try to die but already died when you were united with Christ in His death. The person you were before Christ, living for yourself and defined by ego, is finished. But death isn’t the end of the story. “Your life is now hidden with Christ in God” reveals what replaced death—new life so secure it’s hidden with Christ in God Himself, tucked away in the safest place imaginable, protected by divine presence.
“Hidden with Christ in God” uses language of concealment and protection. Your true life isn’t visible to the world or even fully visible to yourself—it’s hidden, kept safe in Christ, secured in God. This hiddenness means the world cannot touch what’s real about you, cannot damage your true identity, cannot destroy what God has placed beyond their reach. People may wound your reputation, circumstances may devastate your external life, but your actual life remains hidden with Christ where nothing can harm it.
The contemplative truth here is that you’re living from two realities simultaneously—visible life everyone sees and hidden life secured in God. When visible life falls apart, when everything you’ve built crumbles, when the self you present to the world is criticized or rejected—your true life remains untouched because it’s hidden with Christ in God. The invitation is to stop defending or building the visible self and instead rest in the hidden reality of who you are in Christ. What’s seen is temporary; what’s hidden with Christ in God is eternal. Live from the hidden life, not the visible one.
Let’s Pray
God, help me live from the reality that I died and my life is now hidden with Christ in You. When visible life falls apart or the self I present to the world is criticized, remind me that my true life remains secure—hidden where nothing can touch it. Teach me to rest in this hidden reality rather than defending what’s temporary. Amen.
