God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21
Devotional Message
Paul describes the stunning exchange that happened at the cross: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us.” Christ, who never sinned, who lived in perfect alignment with the Father, who had no darkness in Him—God made Him to be sin. Not that Christ sinned but that He took on your sin, bore the full weight of your rebellion, carried every failure and shame and darkness as if it were His own. The sinless One became sin so the great exchange could happen.
“So that in him we might become the righteousness of God” completes the transaction. Christ became your sin so you could become His righteousness. Not just forgiven sinner or improved person but actually righteous—possessing God’s own righteousness, clothed in divine purity, standing before the Father in the same status Christ possesses. This isn’t about your moral performance improving until you’re righteous enough. It’s about Christ’s righteousness being credited to you, His perfect standing before God becoming yours through union with Him.
The contemplative truth is that you are righteous—not working toward it, not mostly there with room for improvement, but actually possessing God’s righteousness through Christ. When shame whispers you’re disqualified, remember: you became God’s righteousness in Christ. When condemnation says you’re not good enough, recall: Christ became your sin so you could become His righteousness. This isn’t theoretical theology but present reality. You stand before God clothed in Christ’s righteousness, which is God’s own righteousness. Stop trying to earn what’s already yours through the great exchange.
Let’s Pray
God, help me believe that I became Your righteousness in Christ through the great exchange. When shame whispers I’m disqualified or condemnation says I’m not good enough, remind me that Christ became my sin so I could become His righteousness. I’m not working toward being righteous—I already possess Your righteousness through union with Christ. Let this truth transform how I see myself. Amen.
