Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.
John 4:11
Devotional Message
Jesus offers two paths to faith: “Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.” The first path is trusting His word alone—He declares His union with the Father and asks you to believe based on who’s speaking rather than requiring proof. This is faith that doesn’t need evidence, that takes Jesus at His word because it trusts His character. But Jesus knows not everyone can believe this way, especially when the claim is staggering: that He and the Father are in perfect union, that divine nature dwells in human form.
“Or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves” provides alternative path for those who need to see before believing. Jesus doesn’t condemn this—He offers His works as legitimate evidence. Look at what He’s done: healed the sick, gave sight to blind, fed thousands, raised the dead, demonstrated power over nature itself. If you can’t believe His words alone, believe based on what you’ve witnessed. The works testify to who He is even when you struggle to accept His claims about Himself.
The contemplative invitation is recognizing that both paths are valid. Some people believe Jesus’s words immediately; others need to see evidence through His works in their lives before trust develops. If you’re struggling to believe claims about Christ that sound too good to be true—that He loves you unconditionally, that you’re united with Him, that His power works in you—look at the evidence. What has He done in your life? How has He shown up when you needed Him? What impossible things have you witnessed? Believe based on the works if you can’t yet believe based on words alone. Both paths lead to the same truth.
Let’s Pray
Jesus, help me believe You are in the Father and the Father is in You. When I struggle to accept claims that sound too good to be true, remind me to look at the evidence of Your works. Show me where You’ve demonstrated Your presence, power, and love in my life. Whether I believe based on Your words or based on what I’ve witnessed, lead me to trust who You are. Amen.
