By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
John 13:35
Devotional Message
Jesus names the single marker that identifies you as His follower: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Not by correct theology, not by impressive spiritual gifts, not by religious activities or moral superiority—by love. Specifically, by how you love other believers, how you treat people in your own community, how you respond to those closest to you. The world watches how Christians relate to each other and draws conclusions about Jesus based on what they see.
If you love one another” is both simple and impossibly difficult. Simple because the command is clear—love the people Jesus has placed in your life, especially fellow believers. Difficult because these people know you best, see your worst, push your buttons, disappoint your expectations. It’s easier to love strangers you help occasionally than to love the person who consistently frustrates you, the believer whose theology differs from yours, the Christian whose politics make you uncomfortable. Yet Jesus says this love—not love for outsiders but love for one another—is what marks you as His.
The contemplative invitation is to examine your relationships with other believers. When you disagree with someone in your church, do you gossip or do you extend grace? When another Christian frustrates you, do you write them off or do you choose patience? When you encounter believers who are different from you, do you dismiss them or do you honor them? The watching world doesn’t primarily evaluate Jesus based on your personal piety but based on how you love other people who claim His name. Your love for one another is the advertisement for whether following Jesus actually transforms people.
Let’s Pray
Jesus, help me love other believers in ways that show the world I’m Your disciple. When fellow Christians frustrate me or differ from me, give me grace to extend the love You’ve shown me. Teach me that the watching world evaluates You based on how I treat others who claim Your name. Make my love for one another the evidence of Your transforming power. Amen.
