Devotional Message
Jeremiah writes from devastating circumstances—Jerusalem destroyed, people exiled, everything lost—yet finds truth that anchors him: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.” You’re not consumed means you’re still here, still breathing, still capable of receiving mercy despite everything that should have destroyed you. God’s great love is the only explanation for why you survived what should have finished you, why you’re still standing when you should be consumed.
“They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” reveals the rhythm of divine mercy. Not rationed supply you must make last but fresh provision arriving daily, like manna in the wilderness that couldn’t be hoarded but had to be gathered fresh each day. Yesterday’s mercy sustained yesterday; this morning brings new mercy for today. You’re not depleting limited reserve—you’re receiving from inexhaustible supply that renews with each sunrise. “Great is your faithfulness” celebrates God’s consistent character: He has never failed to provide morning mercy and He never will.
The contemplative practice is beginning each day aware that you’re receiving new mercy. Yesterday’s failures don’t exhaust today’s compassion. Last week’s mess doesn’t deplete this week’s grace. You don’t wake up to leftovers from previous provision but to fresh supply specifically for this day. When you’re carrying guilt from yesterday or shame from last year, remember: this morning’s mercies are new, not recycled from what you’ve already used up. God’s faithfulness means He shows up every single morning with compassion that never fails, never runs out, never grows tired of being extended to you.
Let’s Pray
Lord, thank You that Your mercies are new every morning, that I’m not operating from depleted supply but receiving fresh provision daily. When I’m carrying guilt from yesterday or shame from the past, remind me that this morning brings new compassion. Great is Your faithfulness—You have never failed to provide mercy and You never will. Help me receive what You’re giving today. Amen.
