Your Daily Devotional 3/13/2026: God Made You Alive With Christ

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Ephesians 2:4-5

Devotional Message

Paul describes your before-and-after reality: “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.” Dead doesn’t mean spiritually struggling or morally imperfect—it means actually dead, no capacity to respond to God, no ability to save yourself, completely unable to generate life from your own resources. “Even when we were dead” emphasizes that God didn’t wait for you to improve or show signs of life. He acted when you were corpse, when nothing in you could reciprocate or cooperate.

“Made us alive with Christ” describes what God did to your deadness. Not improved it or resuscitated it but made it alive—the same resurrection power that raised Christ from the grave raised you from spiritual death. “With Christ” means your resurrection is connected to His, that when Christ rose, you rose with Him in spiritual union. This happened “because of his great love” and because God is “rich in mercy”—not because you deserved it or earned it but because divine love and mercy moved toward your deadness and brought life.

“It is by grace you have been saved” removes any possibility of claiming credit. Grace means unearned gift, favor extended to those who deserve the opposite, salvation given freely to corpses who cannot work for wages. You didn’t save yourself through religious effort or moral achievement—God saved you by grace when you were dead. The contemplative truth is that you’re alive not because you were good enough to deserve life but because God is rich in mercy and great in love, extending grace to the dead and making them alive with Christ.

Let’s Pray

God, thank You that You made me alive with Christ even when I was dead in my sins. I didn’t deserve resurrection, couldn’t earn it, had no capacity to respond—yet You moved toward my deadness with great love and rich mercy. Help me live from the reality that I’m saved by grace, not by my own effort. I am alive because of what You did, not because of what I achieved. Amen.
