Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:30-31
Devotional Message
Isaiah starts with reality everyone knows: “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall.” Even the strongest, most energetic, most capable people eventually hit limits. Youth and vigor don’t protect against exhaustion. Natural strength, however impressive, eventually depletes. The strongest people you know will stumble, the most capable will fall, because human capacity has a ceiling—and everyone eventually reaches it. This isn’t pessimism but honesty about human limitation.
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength” introduces the alternative to relying on depleted human resources. “Hope in the Lord” means placing your expectation in God rather than in yourself, waiting for His strength rather than trying to generate your own. “Will renew their strength” promises replenishment—not that you’ll never be tired but that when you are, divine strength replaces what’s been exhausted. This renewal isn’t one-time event but ongoing reality: as often as you run out, you can return to the Source that never depletes.
“They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” describes what renewed strength looks like. Soaring, running, walking—different speeds for different seasons, but all sustained by strength that comes from God rather than from you. Sometimes you’ll soar through challenges with ease, sometimes you’ll run with energy, sometimes you’ll simply walk through the day without fainting. The pace varies, but the source remains constant. When you’ve hit your limit and have nothing left, that’s precisely when you’re positioned to receive strength that comes from Him.
Let’s Pray
Lord, when I’m exhausted and have hit my limit, help me hope in You for renewed strength. Teach me that Your strength doesn’t supplement mine but replaces it. Whether I’m soaring, running, or barely walking through the day, sustain me with power that comes from You rather than from my depleted reserves. Renew my strength again and again. Amen.
