Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
John 16:24
Devotional Message
Jesus addresses disciples who haven’t yet learned to ask in His name: “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name.” They’ve followed Him, witnessed miracles, heard teachings, but haven’t grasped the access they have through His name. “In my name” doesn’t mean adding “in Jesus’s name” to the end of prayers like magic formula—it means asking from position of being united with Him, requesting things aligned with His character and purposes, approaching the Father through Jesus’s authority rather than your own merit.”
Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete” combines invitation with promise. “Ask” is command, not suggestion—Jesus wants you to bring your requests rather than pretending you don’t have needs or desires. “You will receive” promises God’s response, not that you’ll get everything you want exactly as you imagine but that asking in Jesus’s name connects you to resources that actually satisfy. “Your joy will be complete” reveals the outcome: not just getting what you asked for but experiencing fullness of joy that comes from seeing God provide.
The contemplative invitation is to actually ask rather than assuming you already know the answer will be no or that your needs don’t matter enough to bother God. Jesus says your joy will be complete through asking and receiving—suggesting that living without asking keeps your joy incomplete. What are you not asking for because you’ve decided it’s not spiritual enough, too small, too selfish, too impossible? Jesus invites you to ask in His name, trusting that the Father delights to give good gifts and that receiving what you’ve asked for completes your joy.
Let’s Pray
Jesus, teach me to ask in Your name rather than pretending I don’t have needs or desires. Help me bring my requests, trusting that You want my joy to be complete through asking and receiving. When I’m tempted to not bother You with what matters to me, remind me that You’ve invited me to ask. Connect me to resources that actually satisfy. Amen.
