For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
Psalm 139:13-16
Devotional Message
David describes God’s intimate involvement in your formation: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Not random chance or biological accident but divine craftsmanship, God deliberately forming you with intention and care. “Knit me together” uses language of careful, detailed work—like artist creating masterpiece or craftsman assembling something intricate. Your inmost being, your personality, your unique combination of gifts and weaknesses, your physical form—all created by God with purpose.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” is David’s response to recognizing divine authorship. “Fearfully made” means created with awe-inspiring complexity, formed with care that should evoke wonder. “Wonderfully made” celebrates the marvelous nature of your existence, the stunning reality that you are you and no one else is. This isn’t arrogant self-celebration but humble recognition that God’s creative work deserves praise, and you are that work. “Your works are wonderful, I know that full well” anchors this in God’s character—you’re wonderful because God’s works are wonderful, not because you’ve achieved impressive things.
The contemplative challenge is believing this about yourself when you’re focused on flaws, failures, or ways you don’t measure up to others. When you’re criticizing your body, your personality, your limitations—you’re essentially critiquing God’s creative work, declaring that He made mistakes when He formed you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, not despite your unique characteristics but including them. The parts of yourself you wish were different are part of how God knit you together. Praise Him for creating you exactly as you are.
Let’s Pray
God, thank You for creating my inmost being and knitting me together with intention and care. Help me praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made, even when I’m focused on flaws or limitations. Teach me to see myself as Your creative work that deserves honor rather than critique. Your works are wonderful—help me know that full well about myself. Amen.
