Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
Deuteronomy 31:6
Devotional Message
Moses speaks to people facing terrifying circumstances: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them.” The Israelites are about to enter promised land where powerful enemies wait, where giants live in fortified cities, where everything feels impossible. “Do not be afraid” isn’t denial of real danger or pretending threats don’t exist—it’s command rooted in what comes next. You can be strong and courageous not because circumstances aren’t scary but because you’re not facing them alone.
“For the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” is the foundation for courage. God doesn’t send you into battle and watch from distance—He goes with you, present in the midst of what you’re facing. “Never leave you” addresses fear of abandonment, the terror that you’ll be left alone when things get hard. “Nor forsake you” goes deeper—not only will God not leave, He won’t abandon you even when you fail, even when you mess up, even when you’re at your worst. This promise isn’t conditional on your performance but rooted in God’s character.
The contemplative invitation is to anchor your courage in God’s presence rather than in your own strength or favorable circumstances. When you’re facing something that terrifies you—difficult conversation, uncertain future, overwhelming challenge—the command is still “be strong and courageous.” Not because you’re capable of handling it alone but because the Lord your God goes with you. He will never leave. He will never forsake. When fear whispers you’re abandoned, remember: God’s presence is the guarantee that makes courage possible even when everything feels impossible.
Let’s Pray
Lord, help me be strong and courageous because You go with me, not because I’m naturally brave. When I’m facing terrifying circumstances, remind me that You will never leave me or forsake me. Anchor my courage in Your presence rather than in my own strength. I don’t have to face anything alone because You are with me. Amen.
