But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
Ephesians 2:13
Devotional Message
Paul describes the radical change in your position: “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” “Once were far away” acknowledges the distance that existed—not physical location but spiritual separation, the chasm between you and God that you couldn’t cross through your own effort. Far away means excluded, outside, without access, separated by sin and inability to approach holy God on your own terms.
“Have been brought near” announces what Christ accomplished. Not “are gradually getting closer” or “might eventually arrive” but “have been brought”—past tense, completed action, finished reality. You’re no longer far away; you’re near. The distance has been closed, the separation ended, the barrier removed. “By the blood of Christ” identifies the cost of bringing you near—not your religious effort or moral improvement but Christ’s sacrifice, His blood shed to pay the price you couldn’t pay.
The contemplative truth is that nearness to God isn’t something you’re working toward but something you already possess through Christ. When you feel distant from God, it’s not because the objective reality has changed—you’re still near because Christ’s blood brought you near once for all. The feeling of distance doesn’t alter the fact of nearness. Stop trying to earn access you already have or work your way to proximity you’ve already been given. You were far away, but that’s past tense. Now, in Christ, you are near—not because you’ve become worthy but because His blood made you welcome.
Let’s Pray
Christ, thank You that Your blood brought me near when I was far away. Help me live from the reality that I’m near to God now, not working toward nearness I haven’t achieved. When I feel distant, remind me that feelings don’t change facts—I am near because of what You did, not because of what I do. I have access because of Your blood. Amen.
