For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:6
Devotional Message
Solomon identifies the source of true wisdom: “For the Lord gives wisdom.” Not something you achieve through accumulated experience or develop through intense study, but something God gives—divine gift that comes from outside yourself, insight that flows from heaven to earth. You can acquire information through education and gather facts through observation, but actual wisdom—the ability to know what’s true and right and how to apply it—comes from the Lord as gift.”
From his mouth come knowledge and understanding” reveals how God distributes this wisdom. Not through mystical feelings or vague impressions alone but from His mouth—through His spoken word, through Scripture, through teaching that aligns with His character and revealed truth. Knowledge means accurate information about reality as God sees it. Understanding means grasping how things connect, seeing the bigger picture, comprehending what’s beneath the surface. Both flow from God’s mouth to your listening ear.
The contemplative invitation is to position yourself to receive what God gives rather than relying solely on human sources of wisdom. When you face decisions requiring wisdom, do you primarily consult your own logic, ask friends’ opinions, or research online—or do you ask the Lord who gives wisdom and listen for what comes from His mouth? God wants to give you wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, but you must create space to receive what He’s offering. This means reading Scripture expectantly, praying with ears open, waiting quietly for insight that comes from outside yourself. The Lord gives wisdom—make sure you’re positioned to receive it.
Let’s Pray
Lord, I need wisdom that comes from You, not just information I can gather myself. From Your mouth come knowledge and understanding—help me position myself to receive what You’re giving. Teach me to listen for insight that flows from heaven rather than relying only on human sources. Give me wisdom for what I’m facing today. Amen.
