But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:31
Devotional Message
Isaiah promises renewal for those who wait: “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.” Hope in the Lord means placing your expectation in Him rather than in yourself, waiting for His timing rather than forcing your own, depending on His power rather than straining in your limited capacity. “Will renew their strength” promises replenishment—not that you’ll never be exhausted but that when you are, divine strength replaces what’s been depleted. This renewal isn’t one-time event but ongoing reality available as often as you need it.
“They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” describes different paces sustained by the same source. Sometimes you’ll soar through challenges with supernatural ease, rising above difficulty on wings you didn’t generate yourself. Sometimes you’ll run with sustained energy that exceeds natural capacity, moving forward without the exhaustion that should accompany the pace. Sometimes you’ll simply walk through the day without fainting, one foot in front of the other, sustained by strength that keeps you from collapse.
The contemplative truth is that the pace varies but the source remains constant. You’re not always soaring—sometimes you’re barely walking. You’re not always running—sometimes you can only shuffle forward slowly. But whether soaring, running, or walking, the strength comes from hoping in the Lord rather than from your depleted reserves. When you’re exhausted and can’t even imagine soaring again, remember: those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. The renewal is available. The question is whether you’ll wait for it or keep trying to generate it yourself.
Let’s Pray
Lord, I hope in You for renewed strength when I’m exhausted and depleted. Whether I’m soaring, running, or barely walking today, sustain me with power that comes from You rather than from my limited reserves. Teach me to wait for Your renewal rather than straining in my own strength. Renew me again. Amen.
