In God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
Psalm 56:11
Devotional Message
The psalmist makes a declaration that shifts everything: “In God I trust and am not afraid.” These aren’t separate statements but cause and effect—because he trusts in God, he’s not afraid. Trust is the antidote to fear, the choice that displaces anxiety with confidence. Not trust in favorable outcomes or belief that nothing bad will happen, but trust in God Himself—His character, His presence, His power, His purposes. When you anchor your security in God rather than in circumstances, fear loses its grip.
“What can mere mortals do to me?” is question that puts threats in perspective. People can harm your reputation, damage your finances, hurt your body, create real suffering in your life. Yet the psalmist asks “what can they do?” because he’s recognized that humans have limited power—they can touch your externals but cannot destroy what God protects. Your true life is hidden with Christ in God, secured beyond human capacity to reach. When you trust God, you realize that what people can do to you is finite while God’s power to sustain you is infinite.
The contemplative work is examining where you’re afraid and asking what’s actually being threatened. If someone can damage your reputation, are you trusting in reputation for security? If losing money terrifies you, are you trusting in wealth rather than God? If others’ opinions control you, are you seeking approval from mortals instead of God? The question “what can mere mortals do to me?” exposes where you’ve placed trust in things humans can affect rather than in God who cannot be shaken. Trust in God doesn’t eliminate all threats but radically changes their significance.
Let’s Pray
God, I choose to trust in You and refuse to be afraid. Help me recognize that what mere mortals can do to me is limited while Your power to sustain me is infinite. When fear grips me, show me where I’m trusting in things humans can affect rather than in You who cannot be shaken. Anchor my security in You alone. Amen.
