Your Daily Devotional 3/5/2026: The Scriptures Give You Hope

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

Romans 15:4

Devotional Message

Paul explains why ancient texts still matter today: “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us.” The stories of Abraham’s faith, David’s failures and restoration, Job’s suffering and God’s sovereignty, the prophets’ messages—all of it was written not just for those who first heard but for you. Scripture isn’t merely historical record but living instruction, God’s voice speaking through ancient words to your current circumstances, past revelation illuminating present reality.

“So that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope” reveals Scripture’s purpose. You learn endurance from reading about people who persevered through impossible circumstances—who kept trusting when everything looked hopeless, who remained faithful when easier paths tempted them, who chose obedience when the cost was devastating. Their endurance teaches yours. You receive encouragement from seeing God’s faithfulness throughout history—how He provided for His people, rescued them from danger, remained present through suffering, accomplished what seemed impossible.

“We might have hope” is the outcome of Scripture’s teaching and encouragement. Not wishful thinking or optimistic assumptions but confident expectation rooted in God’s proven character. When you read how God sustained people through drought, delivered them from enemies, remained faithful when they were faithless—you have hope that He’ll do the same for you. When you see pattern of God bringing life from death, victory from defeat, restoration from ruin—you have hope that your current impossibility isn’t the final word. The contemplative practice is reading Scripture not just for information but for hope, letting ancient stories fuel present trust.

Let’s Pray

God, thank You that Scripture was written to teach me endurance and give me encouragement so I might have hope. When I’m facing impossible circumstances, remind me of how You sustained Your people through worse. Let ancient stories of Your faithfulness fuel my present trust. Give me hope rooted in Your proven character throughout history. Amen.
