Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, ‘Don’t be afraid; just believe.’
Mark 5:36
Devotional Message
Jesus speaks to a father whose daughter has just died: “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” The situation is hopeless by every human measure—the girl is dead, not dying, and everyone knows death is final. Yet Jesus overhears the devastating news and responds with two simple commands: don’t be afraid, just believe. “Don’t be afraid” addresses the terror rising in the father’s heart, the panic that his worst nightmare has come true, the despair that it’s too late. But Jesus says fear isn’t appropriate response even when everything looks finished.
“Just believe” is the alternative to fear, the choice that displaces despair with trust. Not blind optimism or pretending death didn’t happen, but active decision to trust Jesus even when circumstances scream that hope is gone. “Just believe” suggests simplicity—not complicated theology or perfect understanding, just basic trust in the Person speaking. The father doesn’t need to figure out how Jesus will fix this; he just needs to believe that Jesus can.
The contemplative truth is that “too late” and “impossible” are human assessments that don’t bind Jesus. When your situation looks finished, when everyone says hope is gone, when even well-meaning people suggest you accept defeat—Jesus still says “don’t be afraid; just believe.” Not because circumstances aren’t dire but because He’s present in the impossibility. The father’s daughter was actually dead, and Jesus raised her anyway. Your impossible situation isn’t too far gone for divine intervention. The question is whether you’ll choose belief over fear when everything visible argues for despair.
Let’s Pray
Jesus, when my situation looks hopeless and everyone says it’s too late, help me hear You say “don’t be afraid; just believe.” Give me courage to trust You even when circumstances scream that hope is gone. Teach me that “too late” and “impossible” are human assessments that don’t bind You. I choose belief over fear even when everything visible argues for despair. Amen.
