Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
1 Peter 4:8
Devotional Message
Love is the supreme Christian virtue. Out of every other spiritual practice or gift, it is the priority in how we show up in this human world. It is all that matters, in the end. When we truly love others deeply as the Scripture instructs, our love expands in all dimensions and capacities. At times, our love is intense and earnest. In other moments, our love is pure and compassionate. But throughout each expression of love, we are simultaneously forgiving and offering grace toward others’ failures or shortcomings. It is in that place where we understand what true love looks and feels like.
True, unconditional love enables selfless forgiveness—where we release the guilt and shame from others, especially when they don’t feel deserving of it. It allows us to maturely reconcile broken relationships, knowing that we all sin, including ourselves, and sometimes being the bigger person is what deepens our bonds. This is the true power of love—it heals, it mends, it restores all broken relationships and hearts. Loving one another brings to life God’s love for us and our love for others, as it is in those moments where we feel God pulsating in the middle of each of our relationships. How can we foster deeper love in our relationships? We accept people for who they are. We forgive them honestly for their sins. We cultivate grace when people fail us. But above all, we remind ourselves that love is the greatest force that can ‘cover over a multitude of sins,’ not by hiding or ignoring wrongdoing, but by creating a path to healing and restoration that might otherwise seem impossible.
Let’s Pray
Dear God, I want to express my gratitude for your love that covers over a multitude of sins and forgives so effortlessly. I acknowledge that sometimes I struggle to love others deeply and unconditionally the way you love me.
Please help me forgive specific actions and offenses that have made my heart bitter. I want to grow in capacity for fervent love and now commit to prioritizing love above all else in my relationships. Thank you for mending certain relationships in my life and showing me that deep love can heal and overcome anything. Help me to remember that when I love deeply, I reflect your nature most clearly. Amen.
