Your Daily Devotional 5/9/2025: Brave, Courageous & Never Alone

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9

Devotional Message

There is a natural fear that bubbles up inside of us when we are presented with new challenges and responsibilities. We immediately jump to worst-case scenarios, feeling stressed, anxious, or worried about what lies ahead. This isn’t unique to you—it has been part of the human condition since the beginning, evident in this verse where God directly instructs Joshua as he prepared to lead Israel after Moses’s death—a time when he likely doubted himself, questioned his ability to lead, and felt limited during this transition.

What God instructed him is quite different from what we consider courage in modern times. We assume courage is a feeling we don’t have access to or are incapable of achieving, when in fact, it’s actually a command—to move forward despite the pain, fear, confusion, or grief, trusting that God is beside you during each step. It is His presence that is the foundation for courage.

We mostly feel fear when we’re discouraged—unsure if we’re capable of achieving a new goal, questioning our capacity to succeed, doubting our power. Fear arises because we don’t feel confident in ourselves. But the way to achieve courage is not to seek it within ourselves, but to find confidence in Him. That is the moment where we not only begin to feel brave but choose to act brave—knowing that God has a plan, a path, and a hand to hold through the new chapter He’s bringing us into. Anytime a new challenge arises where fear emerges, remind yourself of the limitless nature of God’s accompanying presence—’for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.’ The more you nurture your spiritual muscle, the more you strengthen your ability to handle whatever comes your way, not because you are sufficient alone, but because the God who commands your courage also promises His presence.

Let’s Pray

Dear God, I’m coming to you today because truthfully, I am afraid and discouraged about the path that lies ahead. There is so much uncertainty, and I’m doubting whether I can handle it all.

But I know that you have commanded me to be strong and courageous, not because I have what it takes within myself, but because you will be my anchor. Help me place my faith in your presence rather than my own abilities. Give me strength to face my fears and the power to move forward each moment despite the uncertainties. Thank you for promising that I am never alone in my challenges—you go before me, beside me, and behind me. Help me to act with courage today, not because I feel brave, but because I am trusting in your presence. Amen.
