Your Daily Devotional 6/5/2025: Trust First, Understand Later

Jesus answered him, ‘What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.’

John 13:7

Devotional Message

There is always a temporary mystery in God’s actions in our lives. When life feels challenging, we struggle to comprehend why certain things are happening in the way that they are. We find ourselves feeling confused, angry, and disheartened, unsure of how God could allow such pain and suffering into our lives, especially when we’re trying to do our best and follow Him faithfully.

This is precisely the moment Peter experienced when Jesus knelt to wash his feet. Confused and uncomfortable with his master taking the role of a servant, Peter protested. Jesus’s response captures a profound spiritual truth: ‘You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.’ Whether we face health challenges, financial burdens, relationship problems, career setbacks, or changing family dynamics, our first inclination is to question God’s plan, purpose, and timing. We assume that because we can’t yet understand, something must be wrong with us, or that God is distant. However, this verse teaches us the promise that confusion is temporary, not permanent, and that God’s wisdom exceeds our limited human understanding—intentionally in His design.

Imagine, for a moment, if God explained to you all the reasons why certain things are happening. If He revealed where you are in your journey, what lesson you’re supposed to be learning, what this exact moment is preparing you for, and the ultimate purpose He has for your life. Imagine if He revealed every upcoming mountain and valley, showing you all the steps on your path. If He revealed His grand design, you would likely experience more worry, stress, fear, and anxiety, questioning how you could ever conquer those upcoming mountains or handle all those experiences. The reality is—things are hidden from you, not out of spite, but out of protection. Because it is within periods of bewilderment and pain that we learn to rely on God more than ever, allowing Him to instill our spirits with deeper resilience, strength, and faith, which are ultimately the elements we need to grow as we continue on our life path.

There is a balance we must find—present trust and future comprehension. If we are truly certain that answers will be revealed in God’s perfect timing, then we can release our grip and control in this present moment, and simply live as though it’s all been handled. Because the truth is, it always is. When we follow Christ even when we don’t understand, we are proving that our faith in the unseen is stronger than anything we can currently grasp. And that is the moment where not only do we trust God more than ever, but also our own capacity to handle whatever comes our way. This is the character development God is building, so that you can confidently fulfill the plan He has designed for you, and one day—like Peter would after the resurrection—look back and say, ‘Now I understand.’

Let’s Pray

Dear God, I am really struggling right now to understand what you are doing in my life. I feel confused, and because of that, I’m questioning myself, you, and where I am. I’ve become impatient, as I just want clear guidance and understanding of your purpose.

I’m reminding myself of what You said: ‘You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.’ When I look back on my life, all of those past mysteries became clear in your perfect timing, so I thank you for the future clarity you are going to bring to my current confusion.

Help me find patience in this time of uncertainty, and let me trust your actions even when they seem perplexing to my human mind. Allow me to deepen my faith as I continue walking toward you. I may question why you work as you do, but I choose to trust that your wisdom far exceeds mine. Amen.
