In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.
Proverbs 16:9
Devotional Message
We must master the balance between planning our lives and surrendering to God’s divine direction. Part of being human is having free will—we can choose where we venture, what we pursue, who we invest our time with, what initiatives we undertake, what territories we explore. However, God maintains sovereignty over our actual lives. While we may believe that we are navigating in perfect alignment towards our destinies according to God’s will for our lives, especially when our plans feel perfect, God will always recalibrate our steps to redirect us back into His ordained path forward.
Most of the anger, frustration, or bewilderment stems not from what our realities reveal but from the jarring contrast to the perfect plans we had meticulously crafted in our minds. When circumstances don’t align with our expectations, when outcomes are postponed, when situations don’t materialize in our favor, the predicament isn’t what’s transpiring but rather the stark reality that it’s manifesting differently than what we envisioned. We then presume that we’re traversing the wrong path, pursuing the wrong endeavors, or that we’ve somehow regressed.
But, when we contemplate all of the plans we had formulated over the years—to marry by a certain milestone, to launch a venture by a specific timeline, to establish a family before thirty—we discover profound irony in all of those schemes we once held, not that they weren’t well-conceived, but because God had grander, more magnificent plans instead, and we invariably arrive exactly where we are destined to be.
Each time we grip too tightly on our own plans and witness how it’s preventing us from feeling joy, peace and abundance, the inner turmoil compels us to pause, contemplate, and surrender to His divine blueprint, purpose, and timing. What if the restlessness, agitation, and defiance is us merely attempting to manipulate our lives rather than allowing God to navigate our journey? When we genuinely believe that God establishes our steps and is perpetually guiding us along our paths, we empower ourselves to hold our plans with flexibility while trusting God’s absolute sovereignty. This organically enables us to exhale and cultivate profound peace, for even if our plans transform, even if our lives don’t presently reflect our aspirations, God’s direction is superior because in our hearts we devise our course, but the Lord establishes our steps.
Let’s Pray
Dear God, please teach me how to make wise plans for my life while also surrendering the outcome to You. I have many visions, goals, and dreams, and I have hopes that each of the things I desire will come to fruition in my perfect timing, but I know that You are sovereign above all, and that Your timing and plans will overpower mine. Help me trust in Your direction even when it differs from the plans in my mind, and grant me wisdom to discern when You are redirecting my path so that I can humbly follow Your will. Even if my plans don’t work out as I expected or initially thought, I have faith that Your redirection is always better than my limited human plans. So today, please show me the right next step to take so that I walk in alignment with Your will for me. Help me remember that in my heart I plan my course, but You, Lord, establish my steps according to Your perfect purpose. Amen.
