If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.
2 Timothy 2:13
Devotional Message
Despite our human tendencies to doubt, waver, and lose our faith, there is one constant that overpowers it all—God’s unchanging character of faithfulness. Even though we fail each day—we falter, we question, we doubt, we misunderstand—the freedom lies in the profound truth that God’s faithfulness isn’t dependent on our faithfulness—it is simply who He is at His core. Regardless of our spiritual and emotional ups and downs, God ‘cannot disown himself,’ and this truth allows us all to find more grace and compassion within ourselves each time we struggle with faith. Although in those moments we struggle to love ourselves for being fully human, thinking and believing that we’re not strong believers if we falter, His love toward us never changes. This is the unshakeable security He has promised us.
Sometimes, the best thing you can do to maintain faith is to solely believe in God’s character. We often exert much of our energy trying to deepen our faith in areas of life that matter most to us—meeting soulmates, discovering purposes, finding dream jobs, healing from illnesses, obtaining financial freedom. We state affirmations, we pray, we ask. Yet each time we put our best foot forward, follow the breadcrumbs God is leading us with, listen to our intuition and try our best, and still do not reap the results we expect, we tend to feel defeated. That is the moment we begin to lose all hope in ever obtaining what we desire. However, even when our faith in the actual object or desire fails, there is a part of us, deep within, that still trusts—not in ourselves, not in our desires, but in God’s faithful character. Knowing that as long as we are secure in Him and His unwavering faithfulness, that sometimes is all we need to anchor our souls, as it is the gateway towards trusting He will ultimately provide for us, when the time is right.
If this season of your life is testing your faith, or it feels weak, or it feels absent, remind yourself of this eternal truth: your emotions are changeable, but God’s nature is unchangeable. No matter what you feel, what you think, what you observe within yourself, none of it will ever change how God sees and loves you. Even when your faith is hanging by a thread, trust that even that sliver holds enough hope and confidence in Him. His faithfulness remains constant whether our faith is strong or weak, because He cannot and will not disown who He is—and you are part of His identity as the faithful God who never abandons His children.
Let’s Pray
Dear God, I am grateful that Your faithfulness doesn’t depend on my performance, because as of late, my faith feels weak. I’m struggling to maintain certainty, as recently my emotions are all over the place and I’ve been experiencing false hope in all of my desires ever coming to fruition. But I know that You remain constant, even when I’m doubting. So help me rest in Your faithful character today rather than my spiritual consistency, while also helping me let go of trying to be spiritually perfect. I know that each time my faith falters, I always come back stronger and more trusting—so give me the strength to return to my faith knowing You have never abandoned me. Help me live by the truth today that Your love isn’t based on my ability to maintain perfect faith, but on Your unchanging nature that cannot disown itself. Thank You that even when I am faithless, You remain faithful, and that this is who You are at Your core. Amen.
